To the Members of the Ohio District of Circle K International,
As members of Circle K International, we are proud to stand behind our organization’s pledge when it says: “to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership, to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate myself to the realization of humanity’s potential.”
In response to the official Circle K International statement released this week, we stand in solidarity of the Black Lives Matter Movement. In the context of the senseless killing of George Floyd, all of those before him, and the various reactions across our nation, we stand unequivocally condemning systemic racism and oppression and their underlying effects in our nation and world today.
As CKI members, regardless of your own personal identities, ideologies, or backgrounds, it is crucial to remember the mission of our organization, which is based upon service, leadership, and fellowship. It is important to learn, to grow, and to advocate. You should also provide a space for others to learn, grow, and advocate for themselves as well. While doing so particularly, for those who are systematically oppressed in both our own Kiwanis Family membership, our campuses, and our global society.
Of course, we write this message to recognize that we do not have all of the answers or solutions to anything. But we can take our positions to show our stance and empower you as Ohio District Circle K members to take action. First and foremost, take care of yourself and one another, in whatever way that may look like. Please remember to be civically engaged, because your voice needs to be heard and your vote needs to be counted. Be open to educating yourself more, be open to listening to others’ perspectives, and be open to vulnerability when we have these hard, but needed conversations and dialogues. Particularly in this statement’s context, consider donating your money, time, or resources to others and various organizations. And finally, always continue employing yourself as the servant leader that you are and employing your club to meaningfully give back to the campuses and communities that you are a part of.
Yours in Service and Solidarity,
2020-2021 Ohio District Board of Circle K International
